Dear Wolverine Families and School Community:

It has certainly been an eventful few months here at WACS.

On February 8th, we hosted our first “Building our Future” Capital Project Hearing for the public vote scheduled September 5, 2024.

At the hearing, we covered the scope of work and introduced the State aid assigned to Westfield Academy and Central School that will cover a portion of the project.  The District plans to use an estimated $3 million from its capital reserves to offset the cost of the project.  The project will bring enhancements to our educational space including safety and security updates, installation of a new playground, locker room renovations, lockers, paving of parking lots, and construction at our athletic complex.   Please visit our website for a detailed description of the work to be completed.

A second capital project hearing will occur in August 2024. Details about the upcoming hearing will be shared on our social media accounts and in our local newspaper.

You will begin to hear more about school initiatives that involve school attendance. Our School Improvement Team identified student absenteeism as a high-level goal for our District to pursue.  Schools find a strong correlation between consistent school attendance and student academic achievement.  For example, there is an increased chance that first grade educational outcomes are diminished by greater absenteeism in the previous school year.  There is also a connection between chronic absenteeism and lower achievement in reading levels and mathematics.

Our School Improvement Team will continue to make school attendance a primary focus for our District.  This includes developing supports and resources so we can assist our students at the highest possible level.

As always, if you have any questions or would like to share feedback, I can be reached at michaelcipolla@westfieldcsd.org or 716-326-2151.

All the best,

Michael Cipolla
